What happened? Hi. My name is Marc and Im a 15 year old boy from Winnipeg in Canada. My health is good, unlike someone in my family. We all used to live happily and I used to think that nothing could break our family apart, but that proved to be wrong. A year ago my little brother, named Richard (we call him Ricci) got sick from what the doctors said to be a normal cold. But when they saw that Ricci wasnt getting better weeks later, they asked him to pass blood tests to see if he was sicker than they thought. The results said that Ricci had leukemia. The following year was hard for all of us, but Ricci was really brave. He had to go to the hospital almost everyday. It is so unfair for Ricci. He is only a child. Yesterday we learned that when they discovered his illness, the cancer was already in a advanced phase, and that the chances to find a cure are almost non-existent, since the doctors think Ricci has only about 6 months to live.
The boy who wanted to reach the stars Richard Smith is my little brother but also a person I admire very much. In the past year he suffered a lot but always seemed to be happy to see us around and never gave up to his illness. Even now, he thinks he will be better and go back to school with his friends. I think this is one of the hardest things for him. Each morning, he hears the neighbors children go to school and makes him feel sad, because even if me and my parents try to play with him and try to make him feel happy, what he would really like to do is to go outside and play, but unfortunately his health doesnt allow him to. Ricci is 8 right now and is going to be 9 May the 22nd. One of the things he likes the most are stars. (thats why I put this background on the page) I remember before he became sick that we used to go in the backyard and watch the stars. He said he wanted to go in space when he was going to be older, to go and visit people living on other stars. I used to make me laugh when he said that and I thought it was so cute, but now it makes me sad that a child will never be able to fulfill his dreams.
Why Ricci's page of hope? When Ricci became sick I stayed a lot with him, playing games so he could have a little bit of fun. I never liked to talk about his illness a lot, since it makes us feel sad about losing him soon. But a while ago Ricci asked me why I never talked about it? I answered him that it made people sad to hear that small boys like him get sick. He then asked me if there was a lot of little boys like him, and if all of then have to stay in their house or in the hospital all day. I didnt know what to say, but I told him I was going to make this webpage so that everyone can hear the story of this brave little child and to understand what sick people feel like. He told me that he wished all the little sick children like him to get better so they could go play outside. So the purpose of this page is what he wanted: for each people visiting it, its like that person told to every children sick good luck and get better.
What can you do about it? I first put this page online two weeks ago but after that time, there was under 100 hits, and Ricci thought that people just werent interested in sick children. So I told him that I would put his page back online and I told him that in one week there would be 100 000 people who came to visit the page. So if you want to make Ricci feel happy, please, tell everyone you know to come and visit this page. I saw it done a couple of times on ICQ. Chain messages they call them. I started a couple of those but if you can, send this address to everyone in your list so they can come and visit Riccis page of Hope. Also, one of the things he likes the most is seeing messages from you. So please sign the guestbook. He takes time every night to read all the messages and loves to hear from you.
We need help for Ricci 6 Months. Thats how long the doctor said Ricci has to live. 6 Months are quickly passed. And it is almost impossible that scientists find a cure in this time. Ricci is currently under treatment, they call it chemotherapy I think, but the costs are very high. It costs about 150$ each day for Ricci to have his treatment. We will pay everything so that we can be with him the longer we can but our family isnt rich. And my parents dont want to rely on charity, so I decided to try to help them to pay for his treatment. You might have noticed the sponsor at the top of the page. This is my way of helping Ricci; each time one of you click on the banner Ricci receives 15 cents for his treatment. 15 cents may not be much, but if a lot of people come, it will make a difference and allow Ricci to live longer.
